My Creative Process

Living in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside, I am surrounding by nature. Both nature and humans can be beautiful or ugly in various ways, and it is this that provides me with inspiration.
I have two very different styles, for two very different markets: The first is abstract florals, reflecting the beauty in my garden. The second, my main love, is that of exploring emotions and states of being.
I start with an idea or theme, such as: two souls connecting; our perception of other people or ideas; or life and soul being restored.
That idea gives me a clearer sense of the colour palette and the form of the painting. Will it be bold with excess energy, or calmer and more peaceful? Sometimes very busy, other times minimalist.
The physical process starts with painting the background. At times it’s quite neutral, but for others I want there to be a visual ‘texture’ on which I can paint.
Next comes the laying down of colour and form. I have an idea of what shape/design I wish to create, but a lot of it entails ‘feeling’ the paint as it goes down and just going with the rhythm. I put down fairly thick layers of paint, some colours side by side and others crossing over. The paint is then manipulated with palette knives, wooden skewers, old credit cards and sometimes even a paint brush!
